BYOD, or “Bring Your Own Device,” is a popular workplace practice. So popular, in fact, that a TechTarget reports between 40 percent and 75 percent of organizations let employees bring personal tech devices to work. Those devices are mostly smartphones and tablets. After all, BYOD is convenient for companies and employees. Companies don’t have to pay for as many business devices for their employees. Employees get to use familiar devices, programs, and operating systems at work. But BYOD has some issues that many companies have yet to solve.

BYOD came about in 2009, and by the next year it was clear the trend wasn’t going anywhere. Though some companies reacted by trying to ban personal devices from work, the trend was too powerful. Now, it’s up to management and IT to ensure safe practices with BYOD.

The most important issue is security, and with every new bit of malware that surfaces, security needs evolve. Unfortunately, IT departments and management departments have a hard time getting employees to comply with BYOD policies. That’s risky when those employees use smartphones that might not be very safe to access cloud data and sensitive company information.
