New York City, Feb 18, 2020 (Issuewire.com) – Dr. Albo is a reputable surgical oncologist, physician-scientist, medical researcher, and educator. His clinical expertise is on minimally invasive gastrointestinal surgical oncology, with particular emphasis in colorectal malignancies. He has one of the highest utilization rates for laparoscopic surgery in patients with colon and rectal cancer in the United States, resulting in significant outcomes advantages for patients, including less pain, faster and more complete recoveries, and a lower rate of wound complications.
In his current capacity, he serves as the Director of Surgical Oncology Services, the Director of Health Services Research, and the Co-Leader of the Colorectal Cancer Team at the Georgia Cancer Center at Augusta University. In this role, he has been tasked with the development of patient-centric, integrated, and multidisciplinary surgical services for the cancer patient. He oversees all aspects of program development, as well as efficiency and quality metrics design, implementation, and assessment for all surgical oncology services throughout the Georgia Regents Health System.
Pertaining to his educational background, Dr. Albo earned his medical degree from the University of the Republic in Uruguay in 1991. Upon relocating to the United States, he completed his Doctorate degree in Molecular Biology at Drexel University in 1998. This was followed by a residency in general surgery at Drexel University in 2000, and a fellowship in surgical oncology at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in 2002.
Following his fellowship training, he joined the Medical College of Georgia in 2002, where he developed a surgical oncology program and a multidisciplinary MD/PhD program in oncology. He joined the faculty of Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas in 2004. He also served as the Chief of General Surgery for the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center, where he developed surgical oncology and minimally invasive surgical services as well as a Colorectal Cancer Center. He was subsequently named Vice Chairman of the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery of Baylor College of Medicine in 2012. Years later, in 2015, he joined the team at Augusta University, where he currently serves as the Chair of the Department of Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia.
A Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, the doctor is a member of the Association for Academic Surgery, the Society of Surgical Oncology, and the Society of University Surgeons. He is also board-certified in general surgery by the American Board of Surgery, which is an independent, non-profit organization located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, founded for the purpose of certifying surgeons who have met a defined standard of education, training, and knowledge.
Among his research interests and contributions, Dr. Albo has focused on translational and health services research in surgical oncology. In the health services research area, he has published outcomes of minimally invasive surgery utilization patterns, as well as barriers and facilitators for the widespread adoption of minimally invasive surgery in colorectal disease. He has also studied the impact of minimally invasive surgery on reducing the cost of care in colorectal surgery. His work has also dealt with issues of health care disparities in surgical oncology, particularly as it affects minorities. In the translational research arena, his work has focused on the mechanisms of tumor invasion and metastases.
Surgical oncology is the branch of surgery applied to oncology. It focuses on the surgical management of tumors, especially cancerous tumors. A surgical oncologist removes the tumor and nearby tissue during surgery. He or she also performs certain types of biopsies to help diagnose cancer.
Throughout his extensive career, Dr. Albo has made over 100 publications in peer-reviewed journals and multiple book chapters. He is a Co-Editor of ‘Operative Techniques in General Surgery’ and the Editor for the ‘Operative Techniques in Colorectal Surgery’ textbooks.
