Cloud infrastructure has become indispensable, yet it is also increasingly complex. That complexity often conceals inefficiencies that quietly inflate costs, degrade performance, and erode operational agility. Now, a new initiative is helping teams identify and resolve these issues at scale.
Launched today, the Cloud Efficiency Hub from PointFive is an open-source, community-driven knowledge base built to catalog and share real-world cloud inefficiencies. Backed by more than 70 contributors and featuring over 200 documented inefficiencies, the Hub is poised to become a foundational tool in the emerging discipline of Cloud Efficiency Posture Management (CEPM).
“The Hub is centralizing knowledge around cloud inefficiencies in a way that hasn’t been done before,” said Matt Walls, FinOps Engineer at NBCUniversal and Founding Contributor. “It’s given me the chance to learn from global experts and share my experiences optimizing cloud environments.”
Community at the Core
Contributors are not just adding to a static knowledge library. They are the lifeblood of the Cloud Efficiency Hub, documenting inefficiencies they’ve encountered in production, along with the context, drivers, and remediation steps. Their contributions are what make the Hub a living repository, empowering them to shape the future of cloud efficiency and feel valued as integral members of the community.
The project is governed by a transparent, lightweight framework featuring Contributors, Maintainers, and a Governing Board, designed to ensure content is accurate, actionable, and aligned with real-world engineering priorities.
“I was immediately drawn to the Cloud Efficiency Hub because it directly addressed a need I recognized in my work,” said Christine Oji, Cloud FinOps Engineer and Founding Contributor. “By documenting common waste patterns and their drivers, the Hub reinforces the tremendous value of collective knowledge.”
CEPM: The Discipline Behind the Movement
The Cloud Efficiency Hub is rooted in Cloud Efficiency Posture Management (CEPM), a rapidly growing field that extends beyond basic cloud cost control to enable continuous optimization and improvement. CEPM emphasizes the proactive detection of inefficiencies and the embedded remediation of these issues as part of everyday engineering workflows.
Unlike reactive cost controls, CEPM adopts a proactive approach of identifying inefficiencies early and resolving them before they become systemic issues. The Cloud Efficiency Hub makes this possible by surfacing specific, real-world patterns of waste that engineers can act on immediately.
Moving From Awareness to Action
Each entry in the Cloud Efficiency Hub is meticulously structured to deliver practical value. Users can explore inefficiencies by cloud provider, resource type, or architectural component, gaining a clear understanding of what inefficiency looks like in context and how to address it effectively. This comprehensive approach equips teams with the knowledge they need to tackle cloud inefficiencies head-on.
The collaborative approach means that every contribution builds on what others have shared. Over time, this creates a deeper, more nuanced understanding of where inefficiencies hide and how they evolve alongside cloud infrastructure.
Open to All, Built for Impact
The Hub is open to all, providing a platform for engineering and FinOps teams to search existing inefficiencies, contribute new ones, or join the community of contributors. This inclusivity ensures that everyone, regardless of their role or experience, can contribute to shaping the future of cloud operations, making the audience feel welcomed and encouraged to contribute.
As organizations continue to scale their cloud presence, the Cloud Efficiency Hub arrives at a crucial moment, offering a shared foundation for understanding and improving cloud efficiency across industries.
By transforming inefficiency from a silent burden into a shared responsibility, the Hub reflects a new kind of infrastructure mindset: collaborative, transparent, and continuously improving.
