Science Technology is one of the fastest-growing fields in the United States. It promises to create tomorrow’s economy by helping to implement new technologies and ideas for developing goods and services that will improve people’s lives. More students are enrolling in graduate and advanced degrees in this exciting field.

Science Technology is a multi-disciplinary subject encompassing mathematics, physical sciences, engineering, and math; along with philosophy, anthropology, and social science. The key elements of science technology studies include physical sciences including space sciences, earth sciences, astronomy, and physics; biological and chemical sciences including genetics, chemistry, and physics; and social sciences including anthropology, sociology, psychology, planning, communication, and psychology. In addition to these core areas of study, there is a plethora of research and other curricula specific to the different areas.

Science Technology studies strive to develop social responsibility through rigorous research and analysis. Students in the program achieve both the professional and academic goals of the program. Graduates have the opportunity to apply knowledge from science, technology studies, and society in areas ranging from international politics to healthcare. Many graduates go on to become university professors, government leaders, or work in the industry. For those already in the workforce, working in laboratories or other related fields, the benefits gained from participating in this program make it well worth the time and effort.

Program

The goal of science studies is to promote social responsibility and open minds to new ideas and discoveries. In the current climate, science and technology are often criticized for not doing enough to benefit society. As students in science and technology studies programs learn about how their discoveries and innovations benefit society, they learn to be “courageous” to try out new things in the face of resistance and opposition. It also gives students a chance to examine societies around the world and discover how science and technology have helped them in their own endeavors. It broadens their perspective on science and offers opportunities for them to help the less fortunate.

A crucial aspect of the development of scientific principles and discoveries is the involvement of the general public. Scientists and other innovators must be encouraged and able to listen to the concerns of regular people before they can implement scientific solutions. Participating in public forums, for example, allows scientists to test the validity of their ideas by asking questions and gathering feedback from real people. Through these public-engagement activities, scientists and others can demonstrate that they are interested in the welfare of society as a whole and not just a singular interest group.

The importance of science and technology in society cannot be undermined. Through the actions of scientists and other innovators, society continues to develop and grow. Taking part in Science Technology Studies will allow you to contribute to this process by filling one of the many privileged positions in the field.
