Medical Technology

Medical technology is often defined by the World Health Organization (WHO) as the “use of new technologies in the field of medicine to develop, manufacture, test and use new medical products or services for the improvement of health and the cure of disease”. Medical technology includes diagnostic, therapeutic, preventive, and hospital care services and equipment. This has enabled mankind to become well-informed about their bodies and the diseases they suffer from. A variety of new technologies have been developed since the year 2021. Some of these have been in the making of appliances like X-ray machines and heart stress monitors; some others are in the making of diagnostic medical equipment like the latest CMR (Computerized Medical Device) systems.

One such example of medical technology that is being used extensively around the world is the development of wearable devices that can be worn on the body to keep track of one’s health conditions. These wearables allow a health condition to be monitored in real-time by the patient. For instance, a child suffering from a disease like diabetes can be monitored with a glucose monitor that is worn like a bracelet on the arm. In addition, the same kind of high precision medical technology is also being used to monitor pregnant women in the third trimester of their pregnancy using tiny wearable devices called fetal monitors that attach directly to the skin.

Another medical technology being put to use to monitor patients and to preserve their lives is the development of artificial organs for transplantation purposes. 3D printing technology enables the manufacture of artificial organs that can replicate the functions of a normal human organ with great precision. These artificial organs are then implanted in the patient, where they help them to recover from a disease more quickly than is possible with natural means. These 3D-printed artificial organs are being used to treat various diseases like Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease and to preserve the lives of patients who have undergone organ transplants.

Advances in medical imaging also allow doctors to see into the past to track an illness or disease that may have caused a person’s death ten years ago. This kind of medical imaging makes use of 3D printing technologies. This means that not only are medical technologies getting smaller in size, they are also becoming more detailed and sophisticated all the time.

Medical technology is constantly developing, but some areas are definitely set to progress quicker than others. One such area is biomedical engineering. Engineers from the biomedical industry are constantly working on ways to create new and improved medical products for a wide variety of medical conditions. In particular, many medtechs are working on ways to design and create devices to help prevent certain medical conditions, like diabetes and obesity, from developing into serious medical problems. For example, some diabetic medical professionals are using wearable technologies that are designed to help them keep track of their glucose levels.

Another medical field where advancements are happening a lot is anesthesia. Technicians working in an anesthesiology department at a hospital could find themselves in quite the predicament if an anesthesia mishap were to occur. Anesthesia is critical in a number of life-saving treatments, so any mishap that might occur would certainly be a tragedy. Luckily, advancements in medical technology are making it possible for people to have the highest quality anesthesia and for their anesthesiologists to perform their duties with greater safety. This also helps to reduce the risk of complications during anesthesia. Overall, advances in medicine and healthcare go hand-in-hand and these trends are only going to continue moving forward.
