The Electrical Power Technology course is intended for the individual who wishes to obtain an A.S.C. degree and then planning for a professional career in the field of electronics and instrumentation. It also offers advanced courses such as RF circuits, control systems, computer engineering, microelectronics, and more.

In the course, students learn about the basics of electricity, its components, how to connect them, and the principles of electric motors, generators, motors, and systems. They also study various techniques such as electronics repair and welding safety, how to work with wire and plating, how to read and write power technology specifications, and much more. As part of the elective portion of the program, students learn how to weld and cut the power cables. Welding is a necessary aspect of every industry and having hands-on experience in welding can make the difference between a happy employee and an unhappy one so this course provides all the tools necessary to become a successful welder.

Another option available for students studying in Rocky Mountain College’s Electrical Power Technology is the Power and Electronics transfer program. This program allows students to take classes in the areas of electronic circuitry and power technology while receiving credits towards their Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering. The transfer coursework includes an internship at Cisco. Cisco is considered one of the most prestigious corporations in the world, and students may be able to get job leads in networking, sales, product design, and manufacturing from within their company upon graduation.

Education

Apart from the core courses, Rocky Mountain College also offers several electives which allow students to enhance their understanding of electrical power systems and their components. These electives include Computer-Aided Control, Foundations of Electrician Technology, Industrial Design, Digital Multiphase Power supplies, Lighting, Manufacturing Processes, and Wire and Cable Safety. Students may choose to take a number of electives that will complement their main field of study. This way they will be able to fulfill a particular requirement in their final year of studies. Electives are generally chosen which best illustrate an aspect of a particular industry or sub-sector.

As previously mentioned, Power Technology is broken into four main categories based on the certification attained. Students will need to take the corresponding core courses in their specific area of expertise. Core courses include Foundations of Electrician Technology, Digital Multiphase Power supplies, Control Systems, and Industrial Design. Students may also choose electives depending on their personal interests, which may include everything from working with fire fighting to working as an aerospace engineer.

One can obtain an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in Electrical Power Technology in as little as three years. Those who want to gain more knowledge and advanced certification may take more than six to eight years. For those who are still undecided about what path they would like to take, there are many job opportunities in the field. Jobs in Electrical Power Technology range from installations to high-level positions in the industry.
